Baylee, 15, has participated in three of our Washington markets! We were thrilled to chat with her at the La Center Farmers Market about her adorable creations.
CEM: Tell us about your business. How did you first get the idea?
Baylee: I create handmade crochet items such as little stuffed animals, flowers, boquets, key chains, and car hangers. I had seen a lot of crochet things online so I thought it would be cool to try and learn how to do it. After I learned I could do it and it came easy to me I started making things.
CEM: What supplies and resources did you need to get going? How did you get ahold of them?
Baylee: I use yarn and crochet hooks, stitch markers, yarning needles and classic eyes. I bought most of my supplies from craft stores around town.
CEM: What are some challenges you’ve faced in business, and how did you overcome them?
Baylee: Different market locations across the county have different crowds and attendees and they might like different items. I have seen at one market I sold a lot of one item but at the next market in a different city, I didn’t sell any of those. So from market to market I have tried to notice more details around the market type and theme. My first market was a Garden Idea Fair with an older crowd and then my second market had a younger crowd with many children. So for my third market I brought more lower priced items such as my key chains and smaller items.
CEM: Do you have any advice for other aspiring kid entrepreneurs?
Baylee: If you start to do something, and its not working out very well the first time, don’t give up keep doing it. Keep trying different places or different market locations.
CEM: How can potential customers get in touch with you?
Through Instagram @bayleescrochet!
It was a joy to hear all about your business, Baylee! We hope to see you at many more markets in the future!
