“We heard about the kids market on Facebook, and started thinking of things we could sell together. We really like to do crafts with our mom, so we thought it would be a fun summer family activity to make things together and sell them. We wanted to make some money, and we’re always trying to start little businesses like bake sales and selling homemade product.
Our parents wanted us to learn that it costs money to make the products, and that we need to factor that into our business plan. So our parents asked us to decide what we wanted to sell, then figure out how much it would cost to buy the supplies and how much to sell them for. Then we put together a presentation to ask our parents for a “business loan” to buy the supplies, and said we would pay them back with the money we made before we made a profit.
We were really nervous about selling to people we didn’t know, (because a couple of us are very shy), so we practiced at home. We set up our table and took turns being the seller and the customers walking by. It helped a lot to practice things to say to people who came up to our table.
We participated in two markets, and by the second one we felt a lot more confident in selling! We got to walk around the markets and see what other kids were selling, and see which things were popular. We have already been brainstorming for this summer’s markets. Since we saw how the markets work and saw how we could make money, we each want to do our own booth selling different things this summer!”
