Megan share some insight with us about running her own crochet business, as well as some great advice for other aspiring young entrepreneurs!

CEM: Tell us about your business. How did you first get the idea?

Megan: I make handmade crochet stuffed animals and keychains. I started my business because I’ve always wanted to have my own small business but wasn’t sure what I could sell. When I discovered crochet stuffed animals I knew that was going to be my product because crocheting is something I really enjoy doing and the result brings me so much joy.

CEM: What supplies and resources did you need to get going? How did you get a hold of them?

Megan: To start I just needed yarn and a crochet hook. Now I use safety eyes and stuffing as well. I get most of that from craft stores like Michaels and the safety eyes I get from Amazon.

CEM: What are some challenges you’ve faced in business, and how did you overcome them?

Megan: One of my biggest challenges is still having time to crochet and work on my business while also being in high school. I’ve learned to schedule better and have specific times dedicated to working on my business. Another big challenge for me was managing my money and still being able to afford more yarn or a better market display. Over time I’ve learned to pace myself and only buy yarn when I actually need it. I also try to buy my supplies when they go on sale to save a little extra money.

CEM: Do you have any advice for other aspiring kid entrepreneurs?

Megan: The biggest piece of advice I think I can share is just don’t give up. When I first started crocheting I wasn’t very good, but as I kept practicing, it got better and better until I eventually got to where I am today, all because I never gave up. Sometimes it can be a bit discouraging when something goes wrong but it’s important that you don’t let that stop you, just keep trying.
