Meet 14-year-old Jeremiah, a “regular” at our DFW markets in Texas! His booth Toadally Nuts is a huge hit with shoppers. His booth is so impressive, he was interviewed by a local news station at one of our markets! Read our interview with this impressive teen entrepreneur below.

CEM: Tell us about your business. How did you first get the idea?
Jeremiah: I’ve always been an entrepreneur—whether it was washing cars, selling lemonade, or shoveling snow. When we moved from New Hampshire to Texas, I started doing lawn care for the neighbors and landscaping for our church. With the seasonal changes, I needed something else to do when lawn care wasn’t an option. I needed to find a way to make money for Christmas gifts. One day, my parents and I were brainstorming ideas in the car, and that’s when Toadally Nuts was born!

CEM: What supplies and resources did you need to get going? How did you get a hold of them?
Jeremiah: I wanted to start out small and build my business gradually, so I chose just a few products to sell. Since it’s a food business, I first had to test some recipes and pick the best one. My signature product became the cinnamon-glazed nuts. I decided to use almonds, pecans, and cashews since they seemed pretty popular at events. My parents initially donated the items needed to test the products, and then they loaned me the money to get the supplies once I perfected the recipe. My mom has a graphic design business, which was a huge help. She created a logo and the bag labels for me. I bought bags to hold different amounts—1/4 lb, 1/2 lb, and 1 lb bags. We also had a tablecloth printed to make our setup look inviting and really show the character behind the business. The initial investment was around $200. After just two fall events, I was able to pay that back and reinvest in the business.

CEM: What are some challenges you’ve faced in business, and how did you overcome them?
Jeremiah: There are always going to be challenges in everything you do, but that’s how you learn and grow. One of the biggest challenges I face is ensuring I have enough supplies and getting them on time. Sometimes, orders get delayed and don’t show up when I need them. To solve this, I started ordering extra bags, sample cups, and nuts in advance to make sure I always have plenty on hand. My biggest challenge right now is expanding and selling online, which requires a commercial kitchen. We’re currently exploring what it will take to make this happen.

CEM: Do you have any advice for other aspiring kid entrepreneurs?
Jeremiah: Everything begins with an idea! If you have a passion for something, pursue it! There are countless opportunities out there for kids to get involved, but it does require effort. Growing up, I was surrounded by entrepreneurs- my parents and siblings have their own businesses. The thrill of being your own boss and having control over your work is truly exciting. If your business involves products, start small and gradually expand. Also, realize that your business ideas can change over time, and it’s okay to change things up once in a while. Flexibility can lead to even greater success!

CEM: How can potential customers get in touch with you?
Jeremiah: Currently, customers can reach me through my Facebook page @ToadallyNuts, on Instagram @Toadally_Nuts, or via email at toadallynuts@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you!
